Professional Bio:
Ernst Tanner has served as the Sporting Director for the Philadelphia Union since October 2018. In this role, he oversees all technical and soccer-related operations, including the Union First Team, Union II, and the Union Academy. Under his leadership, the Union has become a model of player development and competitive success, earning him the 2022 MLS Sporting Executive of the Year award.

A native of Traunstein, Germany, Tanner brings over 24 years of technical experience with top European clubs, including TSV 1860 Munich, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, and Red Bull Salzburg. Renowned for his expertise in talent identification and player development, he has contributed to the careers of elite players such as Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané, and David Alaba. Tanner previously led Red Bull Salzburg’s academy, overseeing its rise to international prominence, including winning the UEFA Youth League in 2016-17.
